Land Use Planning
Land Conservation Agreements
"We want our land to go to our children"
"We want to be able to afford property taxes"
"We want to be sure that our lands stay healthy"
Conservation easements are deed restrictions landowners voluntarily place on their properties to protect environmental resources such as fish and wildlife habitat, forests, water quality and/or scenic views. These restrictions stay with the property even if it changes hands, ensuring permanent protection while allowing private ownership and productive use to continue.
A conservation easement can reduce the cost of property taxes, often enabling families to preserve their lands for future generations. A conservation easement can be placed on lands designated for diverse purposes:
Wildlands, including riparian areas and wetlands
- Forestlands
- Agricultural lands
- Recreational lands
Conservation easements are useful tools to reinforce sustainable forestry practices. Using voluntary and enforceable deed restrictions, landowners can protect the stewardship investments they've made in their properties.
