Forest Management
“We want to harvest timber from our land to sustain our family income”
Forests, farms, or wildlands that are managed sustainably create long-term resources for the families that depend upon them.
A land steward must learn what a particular site requires in order to maintain a regimen of harvest that will create long-term productivity and health to the land. Good forest management works with the natural diversity and ecological processes to produce fine timber and other products, as well as an array of “ecosystem services,” such as clean and abundant water, carbon sequestration, fish and wildlife habitat, natural beauty, recreational opportunities and cultural values.
Land management practices that contribute to sustainable forests:
- Thinning to promote growth of larger trees,
- Leaving trees to decompose in support of insects, birds and soil microbes,
- Leaving of older trees for seed banks and snags,
- Harvesting to mimic die-backs and fire,
- Controlling invasive plant and animal species.
